The islands in Komodo National Park are really dry

Description of Komodo Dragons

Animals in park

The forest is dry and sparse. Trees and shrubs are found mostly in gulleys and lower elevations. (Can you spot the dragon?)

Dragon and wild pigs at dawn

Three dragons at park dump

They don’t bother humans very much.

During midday, dragons rest in shade

They hide near paths and ambush prey. All they have to do is bite. Bacteria do the rest. Infected animals die after several days and when they begin to rot the dragons find them.

Wild deer and pigs are abundant. This artificial watering hole is the only source of fresh water on the island during the dry season.

Kelimutu (Keli Mutu, Kalimutu) Volcanic Lakes on Flores Island

Information on the lakes from: http://lawr.ucdavis.edu/faculty/gpast/kelimutu.html

Map of Flores Island

Tiwu Nua Moori Koohi Fah (TiN), the "lake of young men and maidens," is a "cool acid-brine" volcanic crater lake that contains exotic sulfur compounds and probably a host of copper-rich minerals in the sediments.

TiN

(TAP is to the right)

About a half-hour before sunrise, TiN appeared to glow and lit up the crater wall.

Tiwu Ata Polo (TAP), the "enchanted lake," is an intermediate "acid-saline" volcanic crater lake whose frequent color changes are probably the direct result of changes in the oxidation state of the lake's water.

TiN and TAP

The most important determinant of color in the lakes is oxygen. Just like your blood, when the lake waters lack oxygen they look green (look at your wrist). Conversely, when they are rich in oxygen, they are a deep red to black.

Tiwu Ata Mbupu (TAM), “lake of old people,” is an "acid-sulfate" volcanic crater lake. (It was supposedly white several months ago.)

Cultural dance in Mone (Moni) (Moe-nee), the village nearest Kelimutu

Cultural dance

Stick dances just like this can also be found in Malaysia, Cambodia, and The Philippines.

My traveling companion is a friend of the family (relatives work in Sabah)

After Kelimutu, we took a bus to Maumere (Mau-mare-ee) then the “fast boat” to Bali. This is a statue of Jesus in Maumere.

Telephone calls are made from private telephone shops.

Toilet in Gardena Hotel (US$6.25/night) – one of the best and most expensive in Maumere.

Park in Maumere

We were in Maumere during a confrontation between the police and army. Stores closed and we were told to return to our hotel.
